The Hon. Eleanor Holmes Norton

Delegate for the District of Columbia to the U.S. House of Representatives

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, District of Columbia, preached at the Cathedral on DC Day, June 25, 2000. Among her achievements in her five terms in office have been three historic breakthroughs: first, the achievement of the right to vote on the House floor; second, the first vote ever and a two-day debate on statehood for the District; and third, a historic revitalization package that she steered through Congress, restructuring the financial relationship between Congress and the District. Congresswoman Norton has been named one of the 100 most important American women in one survey andone of the most powerful women in Washington in another.
