Robert Becker was appointed in June 2000 to serve as Senior Director of Program and Special Events for Washington National Cathedral. He provides management
oversight, coordination and supervision of the programmatic
ministries of the Cathedral and pastoral related functions including
the offices of the Canon Precentor, Canon Educator, Canon Missioner,
Pastoral Officer, Director of the Cathedral Center for Prayer and
Pilgrimage, Canon Ecumenist and the Canon Ethicist. He recently coordinated the Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service and the National Prayer Service which was broadcast throughout the world in memory of those killed on September 11, 2001. Becker is a Canon of the Cathedral and serve as Senior Assistant to the Dean.
He previously served as Director of Public Affairs for the Cathedral from 1991 to 2000. In this position, he directed all external communications for the Cathedral and served as chief advisor to the Cathedral Dean on media relations, protocol and White House and congressional relations.
Prior to his appointment at the Cathedral, Becker held Senior Executive Service positions with the U.S. Postal Service for 15 years. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force where he was public information officer, weapons controller and administrative officer.
Becker is a graduate of The George Washington University with a degree in English Literature. He completed graduate coursework in public relations at American University and in public administration at George Mason University. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminary.
