Ambassador Thomas Pickering has held the personal rank of career ambassador, the highest in the U.S. Foreign Service. He has served as the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs and as Ambassador to the United Nations, the Russian Federation, India, Israel, Nigeria, El Salvador, and Jordan. He was a senior vice president for international relations and a member of the Boeing Executive Council at Boeing Company. He has recently served as the vice-chair of Hills & Company and is currently a distinguished senior fellow at the Brookings Institute.
Ambassador Pickering is a graduate of Bowdoin College and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where he received a M.A. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Melbourne in Australia and received a second Masters while there.
A native of Orange, N.J., Ambassador Pickering was married to late Alice Jean Pickering. They have two children, Timothy and Margaret.
