Gregory A. Rixon

Former Director of Public Affairs

Gregory A. Rixon was appointed Director of Public Affairs in the summer
of 2000, having served as assistant and, subsequently, interim director since
January 2000. Mr. Rixon serves as the Cathedral’s principal communications
executive with oversight and management responsibilities for media relations,
publications, program promotion, electronic communications and photographic
services.

Mr. Rixon was formerly senior director of corporate communications with
Amtrak and director of corporate relations for the Marine Spill Response
Corporation based in Washington, D.C. He has also served as a senior vice
president with a prominent Washington public relations agency. He retired
from the U.S. Army at the rank of lieutenant colonel. His military experience
includes service as deputy director of public affairs for the Military District
of Washington, spokesperson in the Media Relations Division of the U. S. Army
at the Pentagon, media relations coordinator for the Secretary of the Army
and director of public information planning for NATO’s Central Army Group.
He is a graduate of Santa Clara University in California with a bachelor’s
degree in English. He also earned a master’s degree in Public Affairs
Journalism from American University and completed the Army’s prestigious
strategic planning program at the Command and General Staff College at Fort
Leavenworth, Kansas.
