Alex de Waal

Alex de Waal is program director of the program on HIV/AIDS and Social
Transformation and a group of projects on Conflict and Humanitarian
Crisis in the Southern Cone of Africa at the Social Science Research
Council. He is also regional advisor (on the Horn of Africa) to
SSRC’s Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum. De Waal has been with
the Council since November 2004 and received his doctorate in social
anthropology from Oxford University in 1988. In 2009, he was given the
Order of the British Empire. His most recent publications include
Darfur: A New History of a Long War, War in Darfur and the Search for
Peace,
and AIDS and Power: Why There is No Political Crisis—Yet.
