About the guest preacher

In 1958, Martin Luther King Jr. privately recruited Lawrence Edward Carter as a 10th grader to come to Morehouse College.  Instead, Carter attended Virginia University of Lynchburg for an undergraduate degree in social science and psychology, and later received three graduate degrees in theology, pastoral care, and pastoral psychology and counseling from Boston University, King’s alma mater.  Ultimately, Dr. Carter arrived at Morehouse in 1979, where he has remained for the past 45 years, as the founding dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, and professor of religion.  Carter has studied or worked at 14 American universities, colleges, and professional schools; spoken at over 100 colleges, universities, and seminaries; and received over 1,000 speaking engagements from 18 Christian denominations, as well as Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, and Buddhist communions; with over 80 media appearances in 38 countries.  He was a Fulbright-Hayes Scholar in Brazil, and twice a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow.  His award-winning fourth book, The Baptist Preacher’s Buddhist Teacher: How My Interfaith Journey with Daisaku Ikeda Made Me a Better Christian, now appears in Japanese and Portuguese.  And his biography on Benjamin E. Mays, Walking Integrity: Mentor to Martin Luther King Jr. is one of Mercer University Press’s bestsellers.  Dean Carter has been married to Dr. Marva Griffin Carter, a professor at Georgia State University, for 55 years.  They have one son, Lawrence Edward Carter Jr.
