Why Are Stones Still Falling 13 Years After the Earthquake?
Sure, "falling" might not be *completely* accurate, but crews are still locating fallen stone from the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that left the Cathedral with a $40 million repair bill.
As crews wrapped up earthquake repair work on the south side of the Cathedral this fall, they discovered a 16-pound chunk of limestone that had fallen during the quake on Aug. 23, 2011, but had been hidden by scaffolding.
As the video shows, Head Stone Mason Joe Alonso dislodged the wayward stone earlier this fall, along with other debris that had managed to get wedged into the small crevice.
We’re always giving Joe grief for all the stuff he collects for possible use one day, but in this case — that old mattress came in pretty handy when he needed to nudge that recalcitrant stone out of place.
