Cathedral to Host Event on Preventing Gun Violence

WASHINGTON – Washington National Cathedral will hold an event on how to prepare for, respond to and prevent gun violence, on Wednesday, October 23 at 7 p.m. ET. The event, titled “To Prepare, Respond and Reclaim: Gun Violence and Houses of Worship,” will bring together survivors, faith leaders, community members and theologians to discuss how we can prepare for and respond to gun violence today, and work to reclaim safety and security for all God’s children. This event is open to the media, and free for the public.

Speakers at the event will include Rev. Eric Manning of Mother Emanuel AME Church, which came under attack by a racist gunman in 2015. It will be moderated by Pierre Thomas, chief justice correspondent for ABC News, and will also feature remarks from Rev. Canon Kelly Brown Douglas, canon theologian of Washington National Cathedral; Marnie Fienberg, founder of 2 for Seder; Mary Wright Baylor, volunteer with Moms Demand Action; Ryane Nickens, president of the TraRon Center; and Hurunnessa Fariad, outreach/interfaith coordinator for the ADAMS Center.

“The Bible calls on us all to be the repairer of the breach and the restorer of streets we live in, even in the face of tragedies like those we’ve seen in Charleston, Pittsburgh and elsewhere,” said the Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, dean of Washington National Cathedral. “By bringing those who have endured these tragedies together with others in the faith community, media and civil society, we are doing the necessary work of finding a way to heal while charting solutions to prevent gun violence against houses of worship in the future.”
