Good Stewards of the Manifold Grace of God

My friend’s younger brother died years ago, during the Lenten Season, from injuries he sustained saving his younger sister from drowning.  Neither could swim.  The memories of that day are never far from the surface—we find ourselves talking of that day, and of him, at various points during any year—never more so than during Lent.

This Lent, I also find myself thinking about Jesus’ death on the cross.  For me, these two thoughts intertwine to provide a personal dimension to and a human appreciation for the magnitude of Jesus’ crucifixion.  Jesus died to save me, a man drowning in sin.

Every year my friend and I are moved to remember the courageous and selfless actions of her brother in different ways.  In remembering Jesus’ horrific and brutal death for my sins, shouldn’t I honor him too?  The Bible says: Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received (1 Peter 4:10).  I pray that I may be a good steward.
