Waiting and Watching: An Advent Quiet Morning

Saturday, December 9, 2017 | 9:00am

Social activist and contemplative Dorothy Day once likened the season of Advent to the experience of pregnancy. We wait for the birth of Jesus as an expectant mother waits to experience the stir of life within her. “One always hears that stirring compared to the rustling of a bird in hand,” writes Day, “But the intentness with which one awaits such stirring is like nothing so much as a blanket of silence.”

Too often however, this blanket of silence is tossed aside as we rush into preparations for Christmas. Our intentness is focused on our “to do” list rather than the stirring of the Spirit. Our sense of expectation becomes tied to requirements and demands, rather than anticipation and hope. This Advent quiet morning invites you to enter into the season with a pregnant pause as we listen expectantly for the stirring of the Spirit in ourselves and in the world. Alternate between periods of guided meditation and silence with poetry as your guide and begin to weave a blanket of silence that may carry you through the days ahead
