July 5: Jeremy Filsell (Piano)
Music encompassing the golden age of Romantic pianism and fin-de-siècle gallic Impressionism in which Franck's Prelude, Choral & Fugue is the mainstay of the program. Written in 1884, this is Franck's his epic homage to Bach, yet it also clearly points to his immediate forbears Beethoven, Schumann, and indeed Liszt (who befriended him at the start of his career). In its cyclic form, its symphonic transformation of themes and vacillations between religiosity and virtuosity, it is Franck's greatest solo piano work, yet it remains one rarely played today: Wagner for the piano.
