Sanctuary Congregation Network – Information Session and Conversation

Sunday, November 12, 2017 | 10:15am

Gather for the first DMV Sanctuary Congregation Network information meeting here at the Cathedral. Our speaker will be Omar Angel Perez, lead organizer of the DMV Sanctuary Congregation Network.

The Network works in the DC/MD/VA region to provide support to neighbors, friends and family who fear being detained, deported or profiled. Up for discussion will be actions other congregations in our area are taking and that we can take in support.

Our faith will not allow us to permit the criminalization and scapegoating of immigrants and people of color. In the face of hate and discrimination, we are committed to showing love, compassion and hospitality. The sanctuary movement is growing rapidly in congregations across the United States—and it is working. Please join us!

Gracious and ever loving God. We pray for those facing fear and hopelessness in this difficult time in our nation.  We are a country of immigrants and our city is a sanctuary welcoming immigrants of all faiths and nationalities.  We must help our brothers and sisters who live in fear and are frightened.  Strengthen our brothers and sisters who fear imprisonment or deportation and give them hope. Help us to be a voice for refugees who look to us for sanctuary.  You have taught us that we are to love our neighbors as ourselves and you have commanded us with your great love and grace to welcome and care for the stranger among us.  Hebrews teaches us that we should not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some have entertained angels without knowing it. You call us to be our better selves in this broken democracy and your spirit of hope guides us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen
