New Challenges: Spotlight on Gun Violence Prevention

Sunday, September 17, 2017 | 10:15am

The Cathedral’s Gun Violence Prevention Group hosts the ministry table at Sunday coffee hours. The GVP Group is committed to working with its partners to end the scourge of gun violence that claims the lives of more than 33,000 and injures more than 80,000 Americans each year.

Members will share information about a proposal before Congress mandating national concealed-gun-carry reciprocityIf the proposal were to become law, it would override existing state laws and force every state to honor concealed-carry permits issued by every other state.  Please stop by for information about the GVP Group’s ministry and the challenge presented by the proposed concealed-gun-carry reciprocity.

Background:
Maryland and the District of Columbia have imposed strict requirements to ensure that both potentially dangerous people and those who have not received proper safety training are not able to carry loaded guns.  If the proposed concealed carry reciprocity were to pass, Maryland and the District would be required to adhere to the standards of states with the weakest permitting schemes or the 11 with no permitting requirements at all.

While the GVP does not question the Second Amendment right to bear arms responsibly, we recognize that the increasing number of guns and the all-too-easy resort to violence they enable present a profound moral challenge for our nation.
