In-Depth Tour: Service and Sacrifice

Saturday, July 14, 2018 | 2:00pm

Examine iconography in Cathedral sculpture, stained glass and needlework that pays tribute to significant events in our nation’s history and honors those who have served and sacrificed for their country. The tour also chronicles members of the military who were instrumental in the planning, creation and funding of the Cathedral. US military history, personnel, events, achievements, and feats of courage, exhibited by heroes both at home and abroad, uniformed and civilian, are remembered throughout the Cathedral’s expansive collection of exquisite iconography of sculpture, stained glass and needlework that honors those who have sacrificed for their country as their stories of service unfold in front of you. From Washington to Pershing to Eisenhower and beyond, the lives and hearts of the warrior spirit are found on every level and in every chapel. Notable markers of history are also explored and discussed, including Iwo Jima, Vietnam, the emancipation of France in WWII and the tomb of America’s first fighter pilot (a volunteer).  This tour is not designed for children.
