Abraham Lincoln is a revered figure in our national memory. In the Cathedral's Lincoln Bay, artist Walker Hancock chose to depict Lincoln as he departs Illinois to assume the presidency: Civil War looms, and Hancock shows Lincoln's determination to bind the Union together. Historian Amy Henderson describes how the sculptor, shaped himself by the ravages of war and the humanity of art, was the perfect choice to capture Lincoln's spirit in bronze.
