An Afternoon with Children’s Author Hena Khan

Sunday, June 3, 2018 | 1:15pm

Guest children’s book author Hena Khan joins us for this special family event. She will read passages from her books and also talk about her writing life, take questions and sign books. Open to all.

Hena grew up here in Maryland and was drawn to writing children's books because she and her children lived in a country where 60 percent of Americans reported not knowing a Muslim personally.  She hopes her books will build tolerance and understanding with picture books such as Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns, a Muslim Book of Colors and her latest, Crescent Moons and Pointed Minarets, a Muslim Book of Shapes.  Her book, It's Ramadan, Curious George was written at the request of her publisher and helped to make the celebration a reality for young readers.

Amina's Voice, her middle grade book, is the journey of a young Pakistani girl, too shy to reveal her wonderful voice and worried about her relationship with her best friend and her brother.  In other words, she is just like any other girl, she just happens to be Pakistani and Muslim.

Coming out in May: Power Forward, the first in a new middle school chapter book series Zayd Saleem: chasing the dream.

All of Hena’s books have received rave reviews.  She has appeared at numerous book festivals and on a variety of radio and TV interview programs.   Her publishers include: Chronicle Books; Simon & Schuster/Salaam Reads; Houghton (Curious George).
