This position’s primary focus is to work with choristers on pedagogical development as singers by offering inspiration and challenge to the students. In addition to individual lessons, this position will work closely with the Head of Vocal Studies and Chorister Program Director regarding song classes/recitals and assessments.

Scheduling is subject to change dependent upon the needs of students and the Cathedral. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The Singing Teacher is projected to work 6 hours a week during the chorister’s school year with the possibility of additional lessons over the summer, beginning with choir camp in late August, ending at the end of May or first week of June. For the 2025-26 school year, the lessons would be taught Monday-Thursday, between the hours of 2:30-5:30 p.m.

Duties and Responsibilities

Musical Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head of Vocal Studies with revisions and management of the singing syllabus.
  • Provide 8-10 (30-minute) individual voice lessons per week to choristers during the academic year.
  • As needed, provide group voice instruction or small group rehearsal.
  • Assist with the schedule of extracurricular vocal education including assessments/voice classes/recitals with the Head of Vocal Studies.
  • Attend a portion of the annual choir camp as part of the curriculum.
  • Select appropriate repertoire for chorister lessons and pedagogical development.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Attend meetings as specified.
  • Work with the Associate Director of the Chorister Program and the Head of Vocal Studies to ensure that salient information regarding choristers is communicated efficiently.
  • Upload assigned repertoire to MyMusicStaff.
  • Maintain attendance and provide lesson notes through MyMusicStaff
  • Manage parent correspondence as necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
minimum qualifications
  • Familiarity with bel canto vocal technique, art song repertoire, and moveable do solfège.
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Voice teaching experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • One or more years’ experience in a church music program.
  • Advanced degree in music
  • Experience working with children
  • Keyboard skills suitable for lesson accompaniment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills. Team focus; hospitable and professional manner when dealing with choristers, staff, parents, volunteers, and others.
  • Excellent attention to detail especially in the areas of scheduling.
  • Ability to organize workload and set priorities according to department deadlines and supervisory input.
  • Good writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to function with tact and diplomacy while under pressure.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • The position will require periodic travel and working hours outside the normal schedule, including evening engagements and occasional weekend obligations.
  • The position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
  • The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination.
  • The position also requires near and far vision for reading and preparing written reports and other required documents.
  • Acute hearing is also required when providing phone assistance.
  • The need to lift, drag, push and pull files, reports and other materials weighing up to 25 pounds is also required.
