Marin Alsop Conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 2

Sun Jun. 15 • 6 pm Globally-renowned conductor Marin Alsop returns to the Cathedral with the National Orchestral Institute + Festival to perform Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. Known as Mahler’s “Resurrection,” this orchestral masterpiece was first performed at the Cathedral by Alsop’s mentor Leonard Bernstein in 1984. Livestream option available.

David Danzmayr Conducts Strauss

Sun Jun. 29 • 6 pm The Cathedral welcomes the National Orchestral Institute + Festival under the baton of David Danzmayr, Music Director of the Oregon Symphony. Highlights of this Richard Strauss-focused program include Also sprach Zarathustra, featured in Stanley Kubrick’s iconic 2001: A Space Odyssey, and the wildly popular Suite from Der Rosenkavalier. Mozart’s Requiem

The Washington National Cathedral Choir & Orchestra perform Mozart’s choral masterpiece Requiem. Originally commissioned by an “unknown, gray stranger,” the score later became the centerpiece of the film Amadeus. This program is accompanied by The Deer’s Cry and Berliner Messe by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.
