Lighting the Way to End Gun Violence
The façade of Washington National Cathedral will be lit orange in honor of National Gun Violence Awareness Day and the over 100,000 Americans killed and injured in the United States every year by gun violence.
The lighting is part of the national Wear Orange Weekend organized by Everytown for Gun Safety. Wear Orange originated in June 2015 on what would have been Hadiya Pendleton’s 18th birthday. Hadiya was a young girl shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 15. Following her death, her friends wore orange in her honor and asked us to stand up and speak up. Since then, orange has been the defining color of the gun violence prevention movement. We honor survivors of gun violence each year on the first weekend in June. Learn more at www.wearorange.org.
