Spiritual Grounding on Election Day
In the midst of anxiety surrounding election day, Provost Jan Cope and Bishop Marianne Budde offer reminders and prayers.
A Prayer for an Election
The Rev. Canon Jan Naylor Cope encourages us that voting is an act of faith, and offers a Prayer for an Election:
Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (The Book of Common Prayer, 822)
From Bishop Budde: “A Sacred Trust”
In her Substack Reflections on Courage, Faith, and the Work of Love, Bishop Mariann Budde reminds us that our call to love God and our neighbor does not change with any election result.
“If you have not yet voted, I encourage you to do so, and to carry that same sense of dignity with you. And in these final days, may we treat those with whom we disagree as neighbors, each one created in the image of God. If you would welcome a place for quiet prayer on Election Day, the Episcopal Benedictine community in Omaha, Nebraska, is hosting an online prayer vigil from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET, with reflections from bishops and priests across the country. I will offer a reflection at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.”
