Worship Volunteers

Volunteers are key to everything that happens at the Cathedral – including our worship life! We have opportunities for both lay and ordained, including Sundays and throughout the week. If you want to serve God and God’s family here at the Cathedral, we’d love to talk with you.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers

Lay Eucharist Ministers (LEMs) play an important role during the Holy Eucharist by sharing the chalice of wine with God’s gathered family. Our LEMs are drawn from our worshipping community, and are asked to commit to a regular schedule of volunteering at services. If you’re interested, we’ll be happy to connect you with a member of the clergy. If accepted, we’ll assist you in training and obtaining licensing through the Episcopal Diocese of Washington.

Lay Readers

Our lay readers share the Word of God with the worshipping community on Sundays during Holy Eucharist and Choral Evensong. As a reader, you help bring the Scriptures to life for those who are gathered for worship, both in-person and online. Volunteers who are interested will receive training and mentoring in preparation for service.

Nave Chaplains

Nearly every day, people come to the Cathedral seeking spiritual solace or comfort. Many times, they wish to speak to a member of the clergy. Our corps of volunteer chaplains assist with leading weekly services, lifting names in prayer to God, and maintaining a pastoral presence for our visitors who need a moment of pastoral comfort. Our volunteer chaplains are ordained Episcopal or Lutheran clergy.

Healing Ministers

Our healing ministers are lay members of the church who pray with worshippers who have physical, emotional or spiritual needs. This ministry is currently on hiatus because of COVID-19, but we look forward to when we can offer this spiritual resources in our weekly services.

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is a committed team of volunteers who play a key role in creating and maintaining the beauty that helps us enter into worship and connect with the presence of God. Their gifts include arranging flowers, polishing Communion vessels and other worship items, and caring for linens, fabrics and vestments.
