Sir Salman Rushdie to Speak at Washington National Cathedral

Rushdie to Deliver PEN/Faulkner’s Inaugural Eudora Welty Lecture, Speak About His Creative Origins as a Writer

WASHINGTON, D.C – Sir Salman Rushdie will deliver the inaugural Eudora Welty Lecture, with the topic of “One Writer’s Beginnings,” on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Washington National Cathedral. The lecture is co-sponsored by the PEN/Faulkner Foundation in Washington, D.C., and the Eudora Welty Foundation in Jackson, Mississippi, and hosted in collaboration with the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Rushdie, an acclaimed author of twelve novels and several works of nonfiction, has been awarded the Man Booker Prize, the Best of the Booker and a British knighthood. He was chosen from among the most prominent writers in the English language to deliver the inaugural Eudora Welty Lecture. The topic of Rushdie’s speech is in the tradition of Eudora Welty’s own Massey Lectures at Harvard University in 1983, which were subsequently published under that title. In these lectures, Welty detailed the places, experiences and people that shaped her life as a writer.

The event is part of the Cathedral’s ongoing commitment to featuring art and hosting events to convene people of diverse faith backgrounds, inspire reflection and honor the institution’s mission as a house of prayer for all people.
