Washington National Cathedral announces the appointment of organist Edward Hewes as Associate Organist. Hewes currently serves as the Organist of the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph in Brooklyn, where he plays the historic 1915 Moller/Peragallo organ and curates an organ concert series.

Prior to his time in New York, Hewes studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and held positions as Organ Scholar at Canterbury Cathedral and Southwark Cathedral. His career included leadership roles at St. Silas the Martyr in London and St. Dominic’s Priory in Hampstead. Hewes studied at The Juilliard School in New York City under Paul Jacobs and at Royal Academy of Music in London under Clive Driskill-Smith.

“We look forward to welcoming Ed Hewes to Washington National Cathedral,” said Tom Sheehan, Cathedral Organist and Interim Director of Music. “Ed’s extraordinary musicianship, deep understanding of the liturgical tradition, and passion for sacred music make him a perfect fit for our Cathedral community. We look forward to the contributions he will bring to our worship and music programs.”

As Associate Organist, Hewes will support the Cathedral Choir, provide accompaniment for major services, and showcase the depth and beauty of the Cathedral’s organ music through performances that uplift and inspire. His musicianship will further strengthen the Cathedral’s reputation as a national center for sacred music and artistic excellence.
