British organist and choral conductor Edward Hewes is a graduate of the Juilliard School and joined the Cathedral in 2025 as Associate Organist.

He began his musical education at age 7 as a chorister at Lincoln Cathedral under the direction of Colin Walsh. After completing his sixth-form studies at Lincoln Minster School, he held the Organ Scholarship at Canterbury Cathedral before beginning his undergraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

From 2013 to 2016, he served as the Director of Music at St. Silas the Martyr in Kentish Town, London, where he significantly developed the music program and established a professional choir. Between 2016 and 2018, he was the Organ Scholar at Southwark Cathedral, and in his final term, he served as the Acting Assistant Director of Music. During this time, he played the famous Lewis organ for daily worship services and services of national importance, frequently accompanying and conducting the Cathedral Choir. He has also performed live on BBC Radio 3 and ITV Television.

In 2018, he was named Assistant Master of the Music at St. Dominic’s Priory in Hampstead, London, a position he held for two years. There, he played the renowned “Father” Henry Willis organ, widely regarded as one of the finest organs in the country. In September 2020, he relocated to New York City to pursue organ studies with Paul Jacobs at the Juilliard School. From 2021 to 2022, he served as Assistant Organist at the Church of the Resurrection in New York City, and was concurrently an assistant music director at Park Avenue Synagogue.

From 2022 to 2025, he was Organist of both the Church of the Brooklyn Oratory and Brooklyn’s Co-Cathedral of Saint Joseph. Since 2024, he has worked with the School of Sacred Music in Manhattan as a Director of Music, which included conducting the professional choir in the Liturgies of Vespers and Mass at New York’s famed St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, Edward’s teachers have included Charles Harrison, Clive Driskill-Smith, Colin Walsh, Peter Wright and Paul Jacobs. He has performed organ recitals in major venues across the UK and Europe, including France, Germany, and Malta, and enjoys an extensive concert career across North America. He is known particularly for his skill in organ improvisation, which feature regularly in his concert programs.
