After a tumultuous year, a momentous election, and the prospect of a new year filled with uncertainty on the world stage, starting the new year with intention can keep the feelings of anxiety and overwhelm at bay.

The Cathedral can be a refuge, whether you join us in person, online or both, and there are plenty of new year offerings to choose from. Engage in as much or as little as you want or your soul needs, and begin your year grounded and renewed.

Take a moment to participate in our new year offerings, share a prayer in our virtual chapel, or come to take in the beautiful art and architecture if you are in the area. Pick your favorite activities from this curated list. No matter how you engage with any of the Cathedral’s offerings, we hope that you begin this new year surrounded by love, open to possibilities, and grounded to be able to face life’s challenges.

Moving Mindfully into the New Year

Review the year that has passed . . . Release what needs to be let go . . . Celebrate the milestones of 2024. . . Reflect on your intentions for 2025 . . .

Join us for our fifth annual New Year’s Eve online retreat as we explore ways to take stock of the old year while looking forward to the new. Guided meditations, individual reflections and shared community invite us to remember and release the past while setting intentions for the year to come.

New Year’s Day Eucharist

Start the new year in worship as we gather around God’s table to celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Our Lord. This noon Eucharist will also feature a special ringing of a “Solidarity Bell,” fashioned from spent munitions from the Ukraine War. Join us as ring in a new year with wishes for peace in our own lives and in all corners of God’s world.

New Year Decisions and Routines

Online on the Cathedral’s Crossroads podcast

  • Episode airs Wednesday, January 8

Embrace the new year and new beginnings with me and best-selling author Emily P. Freeman as we discuss checking in with our inner-selves, decision making and other practical advice to start 2025 on our first podcast episode of 2025.

Practices for an Intentional Year

Online in the Cathedral Close Online (January)

If your New Year’s resolutions fall flat after a few weeks, join us in the Cathedral Close Online for a series of practices for an intentional year like choosing a guiding word, grounding breath prayer, and regular reflection. Let these practices start your new year engaging your heart, mind, and spirit and return to them throughout the year to reground yourself when life gets difficult. Remember these wise words from Parker Palmer: “Before I can tell my life what I intend to do with it, I must listen to my life telling me who I am.”

Art and Architecture as Renewal

Online and In-person

The soaring arches of cathedrals are designed to draw our gaze heavenward and contemplate our place in the world. Discover the art and architecture of the Cathedral through guided in-person tours or via ournew  interactive 3D Virtual Tour. Learn more about specific highlights and let yourself become immersed in the Cathedral’s beauty as a means of connecting to the holy.
