Cathedral Exhibit Showcases Nativity Scenes from Global Hotspots and Battleground States
Washington National Cathedral’s annual Nativity Scenes Exhibit: One Family, One World: Crèches from Around the World is now open to the public and will run through January 11, 2025. This beloved annual exhibit showcases a curated selection from the Cathedral’s collection of nearly 800 nativity scenes, each illuminating the Holy Family’s universal story through the lens of diverse cultures.
Using various media and materials to tell the story of the Holy Family from different cultural perspectives, the exhibit serves as a powerful reminder of the shared human experience, offering a message of hope and unity amidst conflict, war and political division.
Armed conflicts are raging in at least 100 countries, and here at home, the United States has endured a contentious election year. In this year’s exhibit, the Cathedral chose to recognize 45 sets from nations in strife (including Russia, Colombia, Haiti, Ukraine and the Holy Land, among others), and the so-called “battleground states” in the U.S. (including Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and others) as we focus on the stories that connect us despite our differences..
The Cathedral’s collection includes nearly 800 nativity sets, each crafted with unique materials and artistic styles. Each set reflects the global tapestry of interpretations, reminding visitors of the timeless themes of love and resilience that transcend borders and human conflict. Many of the crèches come from the Cathedral’s original collection, generously donated in 1998 by Beulah Sommer, a longtime docent and supporter whose vision brought together more than 600 nativity scenes to inspire joy and reflection. Over the years, contributions have expanded the collection, making it one of the most extensive in the nation.
Entry to the exhibit is included with general sightseeing admission, and hours vary daily to accommodate the Cathedral’s wide range of activities and ministries. Sightseeing tickets and hours are available here.
