Love in Action: Cathedral Thanksgiving Drive
What happens when you combine two dozen police cadets, 500 turkeys and a really long tractor trailer? Dinner for needy families this Thanksgiving.
Check out the gallery below to see what love in action looks like at the Cathedral. Earlier today, the Cathedral teamed up with cadets from the Metropolitan Police Department, Giant Food and our partners at Covenant Baptist UCC to distribute more than 500 Thanksgiving dinners across Washington, D.C.
The meals — turkey, stuffing, green beans, corn, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and boxed cake — were given by the Cathedral, funded by your generous support. It’s a multi-week effort that takes an army of volunteers to execute.
Over the weekend, Cathedral volunteers worked with members of Covenant Baptist to stock the bags with the non-perishable goods. Early this morning, a Giant Food tractor trailer truck pulled up outside Covenant Baptist and more than two dozen young (and strong) cadets from the Metropolitan Police Department unloaded the truck. Turns out 500 frozen turkeys are kind of heavy.
From there, the cadets unboxed the turkeys into Cathedral shopping bags, and volunteers worked with the cadets to pair a turkey with a food basket. Hungry families were lined up outside the church two hours before doors opened.
And that’s not even counting the 363 hand-decorated pies that were donated by the children and families at Beauvoir School.
This year, we at the Cathedral are thankful for your generosity that allows us to reach out in love to the people who need it most. Special thanks to our partners at the MPD, Giant Food, Friendship Place, Covenant Baptist and so many others. We’re grateful for your partnership!
