Making Sense of a Dizzying Election
If you woke up this morning and aren't quite sure what to make of the seismic election results, Dean Randy Hollerith has some pastoral advice.
Preaching at the Cathedral for a Service of Unity and Hope After an Election, the Dean said some things never change, no matter who wins at the ballot box:
“What do we do now? Where do we go from here?
Well, whether we are celebrating or sad this morning, regardless of who sits in the White House, if we identify ourselves as Christians, then our calling has not changed. We may be frightened and worried about the future, but the God of love that we proclaim, the foundation of our faith, the ultimate source of our hope and our unity has not changed.
God is still on the throne. God’s promises still stand. God’s Good News is still good. God’s truth is still true, and therefore our work has not changed.
…
Friends, whether we are thrilled about the results of the election or deeply troubled, if we claim to follow the Way of Jesus, then we must be clear with ourselves about where our ultimate allegiance lies. Politics will come and go, presidents will come and go (and we will survive this president), but the good news of God in Christ will last forever.
We have work to do. This Cathedral has work to do. Our ideals, values, principles and dreams of God’s Kingdom, of beloved community, matter now more than ever.”
