Welcome Our New Priest Associate, the Rev. Spencer Brown
It’s still a little early for good tidings of great joy, but I have some really exciting news to share! Please join me in welcoming the Rev. Spencer Brown as our new Priest Associate, who will join me in shepherding the dear souls of our Cathedral Congregation.
Let me tell you a little bit about why I’m so excited to have Spencer join our Cathedral family.
Spencer comes to us from the Cathedral of St. John in Albuquerque, N.M., where he has served as Canon Pastor and Associate for Congregational Development since 2020. Starting in the midst of the pandemic forced Spencer to learn quickly how to pivot, adapt and innovate – all skills he will be bringing with him here to the Cathedral.
He will also be sharing with us his gifts in nurturing Christian formation, empowering and equipping lay leadership, and in bilingual ministry (he’s fluent in Spanish). And here’s the really exciting part: Spencer will be with the Congregation full-time! We’re grateful for the Rev. Patrick Keyser, who has transitioned to part-time status with the Worship Department as he dives into his doctoral studies at Catholic University.
I’m particularly happy that Spencer represents a part of the country that is relatively new to us: he hails from Tulsa, Okla., and graduated from Tulsa Community College with associate degrees in Psychology and Italian, and then the University of Tulsa with a bachelors in vocal music. He received his Masters of Divinity from the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas, with a concentration in Latino/Hispanic Studies.
He shares his life with his husband, Lucas, and their rescue dog, Cruella. They love watching horror movies, enjoying the outdoors, laughing and cooking with friends. They both tell me that they are excited to begin this new adventure here in Washington.
I look forward to partnering with him on pastoral care, our Sanctuary and Neighbor to Neighbor ministries, the 20’s-30’s group and the LGBTQIA+ Alliance. He has a pastor’s heart, he loves teaching the Bible, he’s a fine preacher and well, he’s just great fun. Just imagine the good trouble we can get ourselves into!
Spencer’s first Sunday with us will be December 3, the first Sunday in Advent. I hope that you will give a warm Congregation welcome to Spencer and Lucas, and join me in offering prayers as they begin their ministry among us.
