At the end of this month, the Cathedral bids farewell to long time staff member, A. Wayne Fowler, as he retires from years of service to the Cathedral and Congregation. (This follows a distinguished career as a staffer on Capitol Hill where he often biked to work!) In nearly two decades at the Cathedral, he has been the trusted executive assistant to one Provost and 4 canons or vicars. When the Congregation was formed in 2006, Wayne assisted Vicar Steve Huber to meet all the diocesan regulations and canons required for new congregations. Since then, you may recognize his name as the behind the scenes gentleman who has scheduled and prepared the necessary documents for all baptisms, confirmations, reaffirmations, and some weddings and funerals for our Congregation. For these last 12 years, in his thorough, detail-perfected manner, he has been involved in the administrative tasks required for seminarian placements, Congregation meetings, Christian Formation classes, and social occasions. Additionally, he has been responsible for all Congregation membership data and prepares the annual parochial report for the Diocese of Washington.

While serving the Cathedral, Wayne and his beloved wife, Anona, continue to be very faithful and active members of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church. As a staff member, Anona provided years of compassionate pastoral care at St. C’s. Wayne volunteered as Head Verger where he guided and mentored a generation of acolytes. He has now retired as Head Verger emeritus.

The Congregation is extremely grateful to this devoted servant for his key role in our life. May his retirement be filled with the things he loves: his family, music, ballet, and his faith. Please join us on Sunday, June 24 at Evensong at 4 pm to celebrate his ministry and to thank our Wayne for his extraordinary devotion to the Cathedral and our Congregation.
