David J. Kautter

Mr. Kautter serves as Chair of the Cathedral Chapter and as Partner-in-Charge, Washington National Tax, RSMUS LLP. 

Prior to joining Washington National Tax, he served as the Director of Ernst & Young LLP’s U.S. National Tax department.  Comprised of more than 1,000 people in over 60 U.S. locations, the department provides technical analysis and develops technical, legislative, and regulatory tax guidance for the firm and its clients. Prior to becoming the Director of National Tax, Mr. Kautter was the National Director for Human Resource Services.

His particular area of technical proficiency is the taxation of compensation and benefits. He has worked in compensation and benefit areas since 1974, focusing on all tax aspects of qualified plans, stock options and executive employment contracts, including Golden Parachute arrangements. Mr. Kautter previously spent three years as tax legislative counsel for former Senator John C. Danforth, who was a member of the Senate Finance Committee. He was the original drafter of the research and development tax credit legislation.

Mr. Kautter received a BBA in Accounting, with high honors, from the University of Notre Dame and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center.  He is a certified public accountant licensed in the District of Columbia and a member of the DC Bar Association.  His professional memberships also include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the American Bar Association, and the Federal Bar Association.

Mr. Kautter and his wife Kathy are the parents of two children.  Mrs. Kautter is an artist affiliated with the Reston Art Gallery & Studios.
