Lembit Beecher, New Work for Diderot String Quartet;
Franz Schubert, String Quartet in D Minor, D.810, “Death and the Maiden”
One of the all-time favorites of the string quartet repertoire, Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden,” is paired with the premiere of a newly commissioned work by rising composer Lembit Beecher. Beecher has fiercely taken on the challenges of writing a companion piece to this masterwork for the historical instruments played by Diderot String Quartet. In his own words: “Written during a serious illness, Death and the Maiden is imbued with Schubert's growing realization that he was dying. I am interested in responding to Schubert with my own contemplation on the way contemporary society deals with and depicts death, in pop culture, video games, community gatherings, and in private. Like Schubert I will draw inspiration from my own vocal music, specifically a song cycle based on interviews with senior citizens in Toronto and Vermont. These interviews portrayed deep and varied attitudes towards death and aging.”
