Cathedral Congregation Advent Giving 2017

Sunday, November 26, 2017 | 10:00am

The season of love and caring for our neighbors continues as the Cathedral Congregation again joins with six community partners to make this Christmas season brighter for over 200 children in need throughout the Washington community.

After each service on Sundays, November 26 through December 10, you can select a tag from the Advent Giving Trees located in the rear of the Nave.  Each tag will provide the age, gender and “wish” for a specific child.  Or you may wish to adopt a family with several children, thus ensuring that each child in that family receives a gift this Christmas.

How to Give:  Choose a tag from the Advent Giving Trees with details on age, gender and the child’s specific requests. We are asked to be attentive to the children's requests. Please try not to substitute.

FOR AN INDIVIDUAL CHILD:  All gifts for individual children should be new and unwrapped (or in an open gift bag). Please include the original gift tag when you bring the gift.

FOR THE ADOPT-A-FAMILY OPTION: If you adopt an entire family, each gift should be new and individually wrapped.  All gifts for a family should be returned together – with the original gift request list – in the special bag provided so that they can be given to the specific family that you selected.

When to Deliver:  Drop-off of your gifts—with the original Advent Giving tag attached— is only possible before and after Sunday morning services on December 3 and December 10.

What to Give:  Gifts for Girls and Boys – Toddlers to Teenagers
Our six Advent Partners have carefully selected the “wish lists” – by age and gender – for individual children and youth.  The lists request toys (including educational toys) books, athletic gear, clothing, and gift cards.  If you wish to contribute funding for gift cards, you may do so at the Advent table each Sunday. Cash and checks welcome. Make checks out to Washington National Cathedral with Giving Tree in the memo line.

Bright Beginnings Pre-school: Look for tags on the Advent Giving Tree to choose a special gift for 20 specific four-year-old boys & girls who live in crisis shelter or transitional housing.

Cathedral Scholars Program: Your contribution of a $25 Amazon gift card will help defray expenses incurred by the 45 student Scholars from D.C. high schools as they work throughout the year to strengthen their college readiness skills and college access prospects.

Community of Hope: Your contribution of gift cards (e.g., Walmart, Target, Best Buy) will enable parents of children affected by homelessness to purchase gifts and food for their children this Christmas.

Covenant Baptist/UCC: The Cathedral staff and Congregation members will provide gifts to 100 children who attend Patterson Elementary School (pre-school through 5th grade) as well as those whose families participate in the Covenant Foodbank.

Episcopal Church of the Atonement: Look for gift tags for children—toddlers to teenagers—who will select a Christmas gift during Atonement’s “Birthday Party for Jesus.”

Friendship Place: Adopt a Family:  Through this new program, members may provide gifts for an entire family—up to four children plus parents. The Congregation seeks to adopt 15 families. Look for special envelopes on the smaller Family Advent Tree on the Advent Giving table. Each envelope will note the number of children in that family.  Inside will be a list of suggested gifts for that specific family as well as instructions for returning the gifts to ensure that they can be delivered to the appropriate family.
