James W. Shepherd, AIA, LEED AP, joined the Cathedral staff on April 23 as director of preservation and facilities. His work focuses on leading efforts to repair all earthquake damage, upgrade critical infrastructure systems, and preserve the Cathedral.

Shepherd has 20 years’ experience directing preservation projects of national significance through work for the National Park Service, the State Department, the Smithsonian, and the Architect of the Capitol. He has also contributed to the restoration of Grand Central Terminal and Ellis Island. The Historic D.C. Courthouse and Sacramento’s Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, where he served as project manager, have received 19 preservation awards.

Shepherd currently serves on the board of Association for Preservation Technology International and is a past president of its D.C. chapter. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University (B.A.) and the University of Texas (M.Arch. with a certificate of specialty in Historic Preservation).
