Washington National Cathedral is seeking a skilled and qualified Graphic Designer to work closely with the Cathedral’s Art Director. This position will collaborate to develop and produce print and digital designs to present a creative and compelling vision of the Cathedral to the outside world. This position ensures smooth operation of the production of in-house printing needs and requires a creative problem-solver with a strong sense for design, proven experience and ability to develop unique design solutions.  

 The Graphic Designer must excel in a fast-paced work environment while maintaining scrupulous attention to detail, along with the ability to communicate and work in a team environment. This position collaborates within the team and across departments to amplify the Cathedral’s brand identity, mission and visitor experience, primarily through printed materials. 

 Duties and Responsibilities: 

 

DESIGN: Under the direction of the Art Director, design a wide range of print and digital materials for marketing, membership, fundraising, worship services, events and tourism, including but not limited to: 

  • Event-specific media, including digital and print invitations, booklets, advertising, etc. 
  • Internal branded materials, including PowerPoint templates, Word document templates, newsletters, etc. 
  • Web-specific materials, including advertising and graphics for social media channels 
  • Video assets for worship services, concerts and events such as chyrons, announcements, title and text-based slides 
  • Promotional media, including brochures, promotional items, etc. 
  • Copy-read advertising for outside vendors 
  • Photo-centric and illustration-specific such as posters, infographics, icons, etc. 
  • Prepare design files and linked files for printing, including color correction, etc.  
  • Ensure brand identity consistency across solutions. 
  • Review final deliverables with an exacting eye for detail and accuracy, ensuring graphics and layouts meet the highest production standards. 

 

PRODUCTION: Production and pre-press preparation of print documents: 

  • Manage production of in-house printers and prioritize competing print jobs 
  • Serve as principal staff liaison with print machine maintenance contractors  
  • Troubleshoot printing problems 
  • Prepare design files and linked files for printing, including color correction, etc. 
  • Prioritize jobs for in-house production. Ensure that production equipment is operational and has necessary supplies and serve as principal liaison to repair team. 
  • Coordinate the print production process to ensure quality; prepare specifications for print vendors, acquire quotes, guide the production process with vendors, inspect proofs for accuracy; oversee publication production schedule to ensure deadline completion of multiple projects simultaneously. 

 

COLLABORATION: As a service department that functions similar to an internal design agency, Communications regularly interacts with other departments to meet the missional needs of the Cathedral:   

  • Solicit, collate and interpret design requests and feedback from internal clients and Communications team.  
  • Able to make design concept presentations to colleagues, collaborators and stakeholders in order to clearly explain creative approaches and provide rationales for creative decisions.  
  • Work with the Creative Director to maintain and update Cathedral’s photo assets, both digital and hard-copy   
  • Assist, as needed, with departmental responsibilities, including basic website updates, social media, event management and communication dissemination. 
  • Contribute to Communications team project management/job tracking system and meet deadlines in a timely manner 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • 2-4 years professional print and digital design experience. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in design or relevant field. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of graphic design principles and production methods.  
  • Candidates must include a link to an online portfolio of previous design experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 

  • Ability to operate effectively in a Mac environment. 
  • Capacity to shape and adapt creative work and branding created by another team member, as needed and appropriate. 
  • Knowledge of printing techniques, typography, design, illustration.  
  • Preflighting knowledge in all design software. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to thrive in a team environment and function with minimal to moderate supervision. 
  • Solid written and verbal communications skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare print- and digital-ready design files for vendors. 
  • Knowledge of digital photography techniques and equipment a plus. 
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills. 
  • Flexibility, sense of humor and the ability to function effectively and graciously under pressure.  
  • Ability to adapt and learn new technology. 
  • Working knowledge of HTML and email software, and online graphic creation platforms such as Canva. 
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of information and convert to optimal presentation though text and visuals.    
  • Ability to prioritize, set, and adhere to schedules and budgets.  

 

Preferred Knowledge and Experience 

  • Experience as part of an in-house creative team 
  • Knowledge of industry trends and best practices via ongoing professional development (i.e., conferences, online presentations, etc.)  
  • Experience in creative disciplines outside of print based graphic design, such as design for video, multimedia, interactive, exhibit and environmental, products and displays.    

  

Working  Conditions  

  • This position sometimes requires work outside of regular business hours, including evenings and weekends. 
  • The position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending and stooping in the performance of daily activities. 
  • The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using software and computer equipment. 
  • Color vision required for matching colors and creating pleasing graphic design, proofing designs, and color correcting photos. The position also requires near and far vision for reading and preparing written documents.
