WASHINGTON – Washington National Cathedral will host the funeral service for former Vice President Richard B. Cheney on November 20, 2025, at 11:00 am.

Cheney served as the 46th Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009, and as the 17th U.S. Secretary of Defense from 1989 to 1993. Cheney also served as the White House Chief of Staff for President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1977 and as U.S. Representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 1979 to 1989. Vice President Cheney died at the age of 84 on November 3, 2025.

“Vice President Cheney devoted decades of his life to public service at the highest levels of government,” said The Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, Dean of Washington National Cathedral. “His life was marked by deep dedication to his family and to the country he served. We pray for his family and all who loved him.”

The service for Vice President Cheney will be by invitation, and only those with invitations issued in advance of the service will be admitted to the Cathedral. Security measures will be in place to ensure the health and safety of the staff and guests in attendance. The public is invited to watch the service online via Cathedral’s YouTube channel and the Cathedral’s website.

All media wishing to cover the funeral must request press credentials from the Cathedral in advance by filling out the form at this link. All requests for credentials are due by Friday, November 14, at 5 pm ET, and determinations for these requests will be made on Monday, November 17.

Vice President Cheney was born on January 30, 1941, in Lincoln, Neb. He attended Yale University and then University of Wyoming. He married Lynne Vincent in 1964, and together they raised two daughters, former Rep. Elizabeth Cheney and Mary Cheney. He began his career in Washington in 1969 as a congressional fellow. He is survived by Lynne, his daughters, and seven grandchildren.
