Directions via Metrorail and Metrobus

The WMATA (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority) has helpful information on their website, including an interactive trip planner which can provide you with information specific to your itinerary.

  • Due to the way Metro has chosen to list us in their system, please be sure to use one of the following phrases when typing your inquiry into the METRO Trip Planner:
    “Washington Cathedral” or “3101 Wisconsin Ave. NW”

Helpful Tip: For savings, we suggest obtaining a bus transfer (valid one way only) at the station where you first board your Metro (subway) train. A transfer dispensing machine is usually located after you enter the farecard gate but before you descend the escalator to the platform. This will usually result in a free or reduced fare transfer when switching to a Metrobus after your subway ride. The fare for the Metrobus should be about $.45.

If you are planning to visit within a 2 hour time period, we suggest paying the full fare ($1.35 cash only) for the Metrobus at Tenleytown and ask the driver for a transfer. The transfer can be used for a free return trip to Tenleytown Metro station.

From Tenleytown

· Take the Metro Red Line to the Tenleytown/AU station.
· Exit on the west side of Wisconsin Avenue.
· Take any “30” series bus (#31, 32, 36, or 37) going south on Wisconsin Avenue.
· Ride approximately one and one-half miles south on Wisconsin Avenue to the Cathedral (exit bus at Woodley Road).
· The route is downhill if you prefer to walk instead.

From Dupont Circle

· Take the the N2, N3, N4, or N6 bus until you reach the corner of Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues.
· Walk north on Wisconsin one-half block to the Cathedral.

From Woodley Park

· Take a 96, 97, or X3 bus toward McLean Gardens.
· Get off the bus at the corner of Woodley and Wisconsin Avenues.
· The Cathedral is on the east side of Wisconsin Avenue.
