Surya Das

He grew up just a regular guy in suburban Long Island. Once known as Jeffrey Miller, his mother now jokingly calls him “my son, the Deli Lama.” For all others, Lama Surya Das is one of the foremost Western Buddhist meditation teachers and spiritual masters, and a leading spokesperson for the emerging American Buddhism.

Surya Das first came to Buddhism like many others—as a spiritually inquisitive and unsatisfied college student. He sought wisdom from wise guides, searching from small Greek islands to the hilltops in Kathmandu. He found his home in the compassionate wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism.

He has used his years of discovery to map out for us all the richest treasures of the Buddhist spiritual path. In his latest book Buddha Is as Buddha Does, Surya Das presents ten principles—from generosity to effort, ethics to meditation—that help us awaken the Buddha within. All who seek to become better people and share in the bounty of their true nature will find great peace in his words.

A poet, translator and spiritual leader, Lama Surya Das has spent more than three decades studying with the great spiritual masters of Asia. He is founder and spiritual director of the Dzogchen Foundation and author of several books including Awakening the Buddha Within.
