The Reverend Canon Eugene Taylor Sutton, an Episcopal priest and frequent leader of ecumenical retreats and conferences throughout the nation, is canon pastor and director of the Cathedral Center for Prayer and Pilgrimage at Washington National Cathedral. Throughout his ministry in parishes and academia, he has held teaching posts in homiletics and liturgics at Vanderbilt University Divinity School in Nashville, Tennessee, New Brunswick Theological Seminary in New Jersey, and General Theological Seminary in New York. In addition to having published several articles on homiletics, liturgy, and spirituality, Canon Sutton has led national conferences and seminars on preaching, prayer and personal spirituality and worship. He has also served as assistant to the bishop and chaplain of the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey. In 1997, Canon Sutton co-founded Contemplative Outreach of Metropolitan Washington (COMW), an ecumenical network of churches and individuals in the Washington area committed to centering prayer and renewing the contemplative dimension of the gospel for daily living. He continues to serve on the Advisory Council of COMW. A graduate of Hope College in Holland, Michigan, he earned the Master of Divinity degree from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, and has done graduate studies at Princeton Theological Seminary in Theology and Communications in Preaching. An author of several articles on preaching and spirituality, he is a contributor to the book The Diversity of Centering Prayer. Canon Sutton was elected the 14th Bishop of Maryland on the first ballot on Saturday, March 29. He will be ordained and consecrated bishop by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and all Bishops of The Episcopal Church present at 11 am on June 28, 2008 at Washington National Cathedral. |
