NINTH DEAN OF WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL INSTALLED WASHINGTON, DC The Rev. Dr. Samuel T. Lloyd III called of his mission for Washington National Cathedral to be a voice, place and people of generous-spirited Christianity during his installation service as the Cathedrals new dean. Themes of reconciliation for a divided countryas well as social justice for broken, hurting people of the worldpermeated his sermon. I believe this Cathedral is called to be a major voice of a faith that is firm at the center and soft at the edges, Dean Lloyd preached during his sermon to a congregation that numbered around 1,400 worshipers. He continued by defining this faith as one that embraces ambiguity, that honors other faiths and insists that Christs values be embodied in the social order. The installation ceremony, presided over by the Right Rev. John Bryson Chane, bishop of Washington, included presentations of symbols representing the new deans ministry. After Dean Lloyd was officially presented to the congregation, his wife Marguerite and two children came forth to share in the celebratory moment. Letters of congratulations written by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the mayor of Washington, D.C. were also read. Joining Dean Lloyd in the installation service was the Right Rev. Barbara C. Harris, assisting bishop of Washington, the Right Rev. Duncan M. Gray III, bishop of Mississippi, and the Right Rev. M. Thomas Shaw III, bishop of Massachusetts, concelebrants. Imam Tarek Abou-Ghazala, Muslim chaplain of American University, read from the Quran, and Rabbi Bruce Lustig of Washington Hebrew Congregation read a Hebrew scripture. The Rev. Thomas R. Ward, Jr., chaplain of the University of the South, was gospeller. Other participants included representatives of institutions who played significant roles in Dean Lloyds career. Music for the service included performances from the gospel group Performing Artists Under the Lord, the combined Cathedral Choirs, and the Madrigal Singers of St. Albans and National Cathedral Schools.
